What You Can Do to Stay Healthy...

  • Stay informed. This website will be updated regularly as information becomes available.
  • Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.

  • Take everyday actions to stay healthy.
    • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
    • Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

To help protect you and your family from the West Nile Virus, follow the guidelines below.

Apply insect repellent containing DEET. Mosquitoes may bite through clothing, so spraying your clothes with the repellent can give you extra protection.

Wear appropriate clothing. When possible, wear long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors.

Be aware of peak mosquito hours. The hours from dusk to dawn are peak mosquito biting times.

Drain standing water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water.  Limit the  number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by getting rid of items that hold water.

Install or repair screens. Some mosquitoes like to come indoors.  Keep them outside by having well-fitting screens on both windows and doors.

For more information about the West Nile Virus, visit the Centers for Disease Control website.
